At UKRMED in Kyiv, patients can choose fixed braces or clear aligners for orthodontic correction. Before recommending either, the doctor studies the bite rather than one isolated crooked tooth. Gum condition, room within the dental arch and the position of the roots all affect the decision. Adults and children can receive treatment, with the method adjusted to their stage of dental development.
Where two teeth overlap, cleaning becomes awkward. Floss may catch, bristles fail to reach the inner corner, and plaque remains along the contact. Bite problems create a different sort of pressure — sometimes one tooth does more work than the rest and its enamel wears sooner.
Both braces and aligners move teeth in small stages. Braces stay fixed throughout treatment. Clear trays are removed for meals and cleaning, then returned to the teeth for the rest of the day.
One turned front tooth may be enough to prompt a visit. Yet the reason is not always something visible in the mirror. Food may repeatedly catch in one space, the jaws may close unevenly, or a familiar gap may be getting wider. Wear on only one side of the teeth is another clue.
The front of the smile tells only part of the story. Further back, some teeth may strike too soon while others fail to touch. This is why the appointment includes a bite check rather than a quick look at the visible row.
The first visit includes a conversation and a close look inside the mouth. The orthodontist asks what has changed, whether treatment was carried out before and what result the patient expects. Gum health and existing dental problems are checked at the same time.
Digital scanning records the arches without relying solely on a conventional impression. Clinical photographs show the smile and facial proportions. X-rays add the missing layer — roots, unerupted teeth and bone around them. This gives the orthodontist enough information to judge where movement is possible and where extra caution is needed.
Any cavities or inflamed areas are dealt with before the appliance goes on. If plaque or calculus would make cleaning difficult from the outset, professional hygiene is carried out as well.

A bracket acts as a small handle on the tooth. The orthodontic wire connects these handles and applies a light, continuous force. As the tissues around the roots adapt, the teeth slowly change position.
Early wires are generally flexible. Later ones offer more control over tooth angle and bite contacts. Springs or elastic bands may be added for a particular task — for example, closing a gap or improving the relationship between the jaws.
Because braces work around the clock, there is no wear schedule to remember. There is, however, more cleaning to do around the wire and every bracket.
Metal brackets are visible, compact and durable. They are used for many types of tooth movement and bite correction.
At UKRMED, placement of the Mini Prevail metal system is UAH 21,000.
Ceramic brackets soften the contrast between the appliance and the enamel. They are still visible — the archwire remains — but the overall appearance is less pronounced than with polished metal.
A little caution at meals prevents avoidable repairs. Firm fruit is better sliced, and hard nuts should not be cracked with the front teeth.
UKRMED lists the ceramic system from UAH 26,000, while the sapphire version is UAH 28,000.
With a traditional bracket, small ligatures keep the wire inside the slot. A self-ligating version uses its own closing clip instead. The rest of the process remains familiar: wires, planned pressure and regular orthodontic reviews.
This changes the way the wire is held, not the biology of tooth movement. Treatment still takes time, and reviews remain necessary.
The metal self-ligating option at UKRMED is UAH 34,000. Ceramic systems of this type begin at UAH 38,000.
A problem may appear limited to the upper teeth. Once those teeth move, however, their contact with the lower row changes. Straightening one arch without considering the other can leave the bite less stable than before.
Treatment on one jaw is possible when the contacts allow it. A partial system may also be used for several teeth rather than the entire arch. Placement of a partial brace system costs UAH 15,000.
Cavities and gum inflammation are addressed before placement. Professional cleaning is added when plaque or calculus would interfere with treatment.
Each bracket is bonded in a calculated position, and the first wire is inserted. The appointment itself should not be painful. The more noticeable part often begins that evening: biting into firm food feels unusual, and the inside of the cheeks becomes aware of every bracket. Soft food and orthodontic wax usually make this short adjustment period easier.
At later visits, the orthodontist checks the new contacts and looks at how far individual teeth have moved. The next step may involve activating the current wire, replacing it or adding elastic traction.
Activation of the system costs UAH 800. Replacing the wire and carrying out the correction costs UAH 1,000. A loose bracket or sharp wire should be reported to the clinic before the next scheduled visit.
Aligner treatment does not rely on one tray for the entire course. Patients receive a sequence, and every new aligner carries the teeth a little further than the previous one. The difference between two neighbouring trays can be almost impossible to spot by eye.
Planning starts with photographs, a digital scan and a 3D model of the expected movements. Small tooth-coloured attachments may be added when the plastic needs a better hold for rotation or another precise movement.
Clear aligners do not disappear entirely. Their edges and attachments remain visible at close range, although they attract far less attention than a metal system.
Aligners come out for meals and toothbrushing. The rest of the day, they need to stay on the teeth for the treatment to progress.
This is where patient discipline becomes important. A tray left out for long periods cannot complete its stage of movement. The next one may then sit poorly or feel tighter than expected.
Review visits focus on fit. The orthodontist checks whether any part of the tray is lifting away from a tooth and whether the attachments remain secure. If a tray is damaged or lost, the safest next step may be the previous aligner, a replacement or the next one — but the clinic should make that call.
Fixed braces continue working without daily decisions from the patient. This may be particularly useful for complicated tooth movements. Their drawbacks are visibility and more demanding oral hygiene.
Aligners are removed for meals and make brushing easier. They are also more discreet. Yet this convenience depends on regular wear — someone who frequently forgets the trays may lose the planned progress.
The orthodontist bases the recommendation on the bite and required movements, while also considering which routine the patient can follow in everyday life.
An orthodontic assessment can be useful while baby and permanent teeth are still present together. At this stage, the doctor may notice that the jaw is narrow, a permanent tooth lacks room or its eruption direction looks unusual.
A removable plate or functional appliance can sometimes guide development and create space. Full fixed braces are more commonly considered once the main permanent teeth have appeared.
Some teenagers can use aligners. The method is sensible only when the trays will be worn consistently rather than mainly before clinic appointments.
Brackets and wires create areas that an ordinary brush may miss. A single-tufted brush works around individual brackets, while interdental brushes pass under the wire. Firm foods are safer when cut into smaller pieces.
Clear trays need cool or lukewarm water and a separate soft brush. Heat can subtly distort the plastic; even a small change may stop it from sitting closely over the teeth.
After active movement, the teeth need support while the surrounding tissues adapt. This may be a slim wire bonded behind the front teeth, a removable retention tray or a combination of both. At UKRMED, either type of retainer is priced at UAH 3,000.
There is no fixed duration for braces. Moving several mildly crowded teeth is different from rebuilding an unstable bite. The orthodontist estimates the term after diagnostics and monitors it as treatment progresses.
Bonding the brackets should not cause pain. Sensitivity is more likely to begin later, once the wire starts applying pressure. Chewing may feel uncomfortable for several days before the teeth adapt.
The diagnostic stage is UAH 5,000, and a separately ordered tray is EUR 100. Three package sizes are available: EUR 1,900 for up to 20 aligners, EUR 3,600 for up to 40 and EUR 5,400 for up to 60.
The choice is not simply "visible or invisible". Fixed braces can give the orthodontist steadier control over certain complex movements. Aligners make meals and cleaning easier, but missed wear time quickly affects their progress. Bite mechanics come first; daily routine helps decide between the clinically suitable options.
