The first thing a patient notices is the space. What happens afterwards is less visible: the tooth beside it may begin shifting, meals are chewed more on the opposite side, and the bone no longer receives pressure from a natural root.
A dental implant restores the missing support inside the jaw. The crown is added later through an abutment. Since the replacement stands independently, healthy neighbouring teeth do not have to carry it or be filed down.
There is no single patient story. A tooth might have fractured in an accident. It might be too damaged for another filling or crown. In other cases, the main concern is a removable denture that shifts during speech or rubs the gum.
One implant may carry one crown. A longer gap or an entire arch can be restored with several implant supports.
Could the natural tooth still be kept? That question comes before surgery. The dentist checks its root and remaining structure first. Extraction is discussed only when predictable restoration is no longer possible.
A CT scan gives the surgeon the information that cannot be seen during an ordinary examination. How wide is the bone? Where does the nerve canal run? How close is the maxillary sinus? The answers influence the length, diameter and position of the implant.
Dental problems are dealt with before surgery. This may mean treating decay, settling inflammation or removing plaque and calculus during professional cleaning.
Bone volume differs from one site to another. A wide, well-preserved ridge may be ready for placement without an additional procedure. A narrow ridge — or limited room beneath the sinus — may call for grafting or a sinus lift. The CT scan shows which situation the surgeon is dealing with.
The area is numbed with local anaesthesia. The surgeon then places the implant according to the position prepared during planning and tests its initial hold in the bone.
Healing does not look dramatic from the outside. Inside, however, the surrounding bone is forming a close connection with the implant surface. Dentists call this osseointegration. It does not follow one timetable for everyone: bone density, implant location and recovery all have an effect.
Once the implant can safely carry the restoration, an abutment is connected. The crown is tried in, compared with the neighbouring teeth and checked against the opposing bite before it is secured.
Sometimes the failing tooth is removed and the implant is placed into the fresh socket at the same appointment. This avoids a second surgical visit, but only when the site provides the right conditions.
Much becomes clear only once the tooth is out. Are the socket walls preserved? Can the new implant lock into the bone firmly enough? If the answers are yes, immediate placement may go ahead. If not, healing comes first and implantation follows later.
An immediate temporary crown is another separate decision. It is used only when biting pressure can be kept away from the healing implant.

A patient with no remaining teeth does not necessarily need one implant for every crown. Several implants can support a fixed or removable full-arch prosthesis.

The surgical implant is not always the whole treatment price. CT imaging, the healing component, abutment and crown may appear as separate stages. Bone grafting is included only when required.

There is no identical healing term for every implant. A dense area of the lower jaw and a softer area of the upper jaw may behave differently. Initial stability and individual recovery also matter, so progress is checked at review visits.
A familiar name or higher price does not settle the choice. The surgeon looks at the available bone and the planned crown, then selects a system and surgical protocol that fit those conditions.
