Hyaluronic acid is a natural component of the skin that holds water. In fillers, its molecules are cross-linked, so the gel is not absorbed at once but broken down gradually. The density of the gel decides where it is used: a soft, flexible gel for the mobile lips, a firmer one for support in the cheeks and chin.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology, hyaluronic acid fillers typically last 4 to 12 months. In the lips, which move constantly, the gel breaks down faster; in the cheeks and chin, more slowly.
Besides HA gels, Radiesse, a calcium hydroxylapatite filler, is used to support the cheeks and lower face, and fat grafting restores volume with your own tissue.
Fillers add volume, but they cannot move bone or remove excess skin. Unlike botulinum toxin, they do not affect muscles: filler fills, botox relaxes. If the facial outline depends on the bite or jaw position, the doctor will suggest seeing an orthodontist or maxillofacial surgeon — at UKRMED, they work alongside each other.
The lips are assessed in proportion to the whole face: outline, symmetry, the balance of upper and lower lip, and the smile line. Some patients need volume, others only a sharper border. Lip enhancement can be subtle: 0.5 ml is enough for a retouch and looks natural. For a more noticeable result, the doctor may suggest 1 ml or a staged approach.
Lip contouring is planned around your own anatomy, not someone else's photo. Too much volume in one session increases the risk of swelling, lumps and an unnatural look. For a lasting change in upper lip shape, a surgical bullhorn lip lift may be considered.
Cheeks. With age, the midface loses support and the face looks tired. Cheek fillers restore volume and gently lift the tissues below. That is why cheek contouring often comes first when the concern is the nasolabial folds, rather than filling the fold itself. Cheek enhancement of this kind is a form of facial volume restoration, not just "bigger cheeks".
Chin. Chin fillers add projection, correct mild asymmetry and balance the profile. Chin contouring with filler does not correct the bite or change the position of the lower jaw.
Nasolabial folds and creases. Nasolabial fold fillers are appropriate when the fold is deep even at rest. For fine surface creases, a blanching technique is used: very small amounts of soft filler are placed close to the skin surface.

The change is visible straight away but distorted by swelling. According to the AAD, redness, swelling, tenderness and bruising usually clear within 7 to 14 days. The final shape is assessed after that, at a follow-up visit.
After treatment, do not massage the area, avoid strenuous exercise until the next day, and stay away from saunas, tanning beds and strong sun. Let the doctor know about any planned dental treatment.
Treatment is postponed if there is inflammation or infection at the injection site, an active cold sore, or during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Tell the doctor about serious allergies, reactions to lidocaine or earlier fillers, bleeding disorders and any medicines you take. Do not stop prescribed blood thinners on your own.
The most serious complication is injection into a blood vessel. The FDA notes that it can cause tissue necrosis, vision problems including blindness, and stroke. It is rare, but every injector must be ready to act immediately. HA gels can be dissolved with an enzyme, and guidelines on vascular occlusion recommend giving it as soon as possible. The clinic keeps a filler-dissolving product on site.
Contact the doctor immediately if you notice increasing pain, pale, mottled or darkening skin, or any change in vision after an injection.
