A 2025 systematic review of 1,126 patients found both methods effective with high satisfaction, trending in favour of osseous genioplasty. Implants had more infections (up to 24% in some series) and wound breakdown, while bone surgery often caused temporary numbness of the lip and chin, persisting longer in 7–13% of patients. Osseous genioplasty also changes the soft tissues more predictably.
No. Chin surgery changes only its contour, not the position of the teeth or jaw. If a receding chin is due to an underdeveloped lower jaw and a poor bite, orthodontics with braces and orthognathic surgery are considered. The surgeon reviews a jaw CT and how the teeth meet at the consultation.
For a small lack of projection or asymmetry, chin fillers or Radiesse can help. The effect is temporary but involves no incisions or downtime. For significant changes, surgical chin correction is the only option.
A neck lift removes excess skin, and chin liposuction removes fat under the chin. Chin surgery, by contrast, works on the bony foundation. A double chin often looks more pronounced because of weak chin projection, and combining chin surgery with liposuction then gives a better result than either alone. For facial balance, it is sometimes combined with rhinoplasty.

According to ASPS, after chin augmentation swelling lasts a few days and most patients return to work within a week. Soft food is eaten for a few days, and careful oral hygiene is needed if the incision is inside the mouth. Numbness of the lip and chin usually fades gradually.
Infection, implant shift, temporary or prolonged numbness, asymmetry and the need for revision. Surgery is postponed with acute infection, uncontrolled illness or bleeding disorders. Tell the surgeon about all medicines and supplements.
