Removing wisdom teeth under sedation in Kyiv

A third molar has come through completely. It stands upright, does not trap food and causes no trouble. There may be no reason to remove it. The dentist can continue checking it during routine visits.

An impacted wisdom tooth behaves differently. It can stay inside the jaw, appear only partly or lean against the tooth in front. Food may collect beneath the gum, and the jaw may become stiff. The tooth’s position is checked on an X-ray.

Sedation during wisdom tooth removal

Sedation causes drowsiness; the patient may still respond. General anaesthesia involves complete loss of consciousness.

The anaesthesiologist reviews the medical history before surgery. During the procedure, the surgeon removes the tooth and the anaesthesiologist monitors the patient.

Local anaesthetic may also be used. Both methods require prior medical assessment.

When sedation may be useful

For one person, the difficulty is a severe fear of dental surgery. For another, it is a gag reflex that starts as soon as instruments reach the back of the mouth. Sedation may also be discussed when impacted wisdom tooth removal is expected to take time or several third molars are included in one surgical plan.

Removing all four wisdom teeth at once is possible in some cases. That does not make it the default. One tooth may be straightforward; another may lie deep in bone beside an important anatomical structure. If the full procedure would be too long or extensive, the surgeon can divide it into stages.

X-ray, CT and preparation

Planning usually begins with a panoramic X-ray. It shows both jaws and all four wisdom teeth on one image. CT is added when the two-dimensional view leaves doubt—for example, when the roots of a lower third molar appear very close to the mandibular canal. For an upper “eight”, the image helps determine whether the roots end near the floor of the maxillary sinus.

Tell the anaesthesiologist which medicines you take and about any allergies, chronic illnesses or previous reactions to anaesthesia.

Follow the fasting instructions given before surgery. Someone must also be available to accompany the patient home.

What happens during surgical extraction

First come the monitors. Medication follows. Dental work begins only when the intended level of sedation or anaesthesia has been reached.

A tooth hidden beneath the gum requires surgical access. If bone covers it, the surgeon may remove a small amount. A large or awkwardly positioned tooth is sometimes separated into several pieces. Each part can then be taken out through a smaller opening. The socket is checked and cleaned afterwards. Stitches are added when needed.

Waking happens at the clinic. Some people become alert quite quickly; others need more time. Discharge is based on the patient’s condition. Driving, machinery and other quick-reaction tasks remain off limits for the period set by the anaesthesiologist.

The first days after removal

Swelling and temporary jaw stiffness are common. Choose soft food that is not hot.

The socket should be disturbed as little as possible on the first day. Vigorous rinsing is postponed. So are straws and attempts to inspect the wound with a finger or tongue. These actions can dislodge the blood clot. Avoid smoking during recovery.

Swelling should gradually decrease. Contact UKRMED if it worsens or if pain, bleeding, fever or a bad smell develops.

Price of wisdom tooth removal

An oral surgeon consultation at UKRMED costs UAH 600. An atypical wisdom tooth extraction under the all-inclusive package is listed at UAH 1,800–3,500. The listed price for impacted tooth extraction is UAH 4,500.

Sedation or general anaesthesia is calculated separately. The amount depends on how many teeth are being removed, where they are positioned and how long anaesthetic monitoring is expected to last. A complete estimate can be prepared after both consultations.
